Wed, 17 June 2009 ![]() Terry Urban & Gold Coin created a great mash-up of Santigold's debut album and sprinkled a bunch of southern rappers all over it. The result is fantastic, so I'm sharing it with the paulcasts.com audience even though you're not supposed to hear it. Thu, 12 March 2009 ![]() When I was young, I remember seeing the video for George Michael's "Careless Whisper" on Muchmusic and the feeling like it was the longest video in the world. It was a mini soap opera of heartbreak and loneliness that I, at 7, couldn't understand...yet that chorus always got stuck in my head for days. I'd be sitting at Smitty's with my parents and this song would come on and it would start all over again. Even to this day, whenever I hear, "never going to dance again, guilty feelings got no rythm...", I replay that chorus over and over until everyone around me wants to punch me in the throat. I still don't know the lyrics. Anyway, I finish this mix off with a long sample of that George Michael classic mixed with dirty south twist...and all those old feelings come right back. I don't care how lame that sounds. 1. Big Boi - International Players Anthem (paul blend) 2. The Dream (feat. R.Kelly) - Shawty Is The Shit (Raziek Remix/paul blend) 3. Wed, 4 March 2009 ![]() The third compilation in the "Slow and Low" series. I usually get a kick out of a good cover song...assuming it's well done. Some of them tread the line of cheesy, yet others create a new feel altogether. From my understanding, a cover song is a way to honor a song that someone views as classic. If that's the case, the more renditions that one song has by other artists, the more 'classic' it must be, right? Jealous Guy by John Lennon has been covered and commercially released 192 different ways...so it must be a classic (in my opinion, the Donny Hathaway version is better than the original). A recent trend seems to be to cover Umbrella, by Rihanna. According to Wikipedia, artists such as Amanda Palmer, Manic Street Preachers, OneRepublic, Lillasyster, Scott Simons, Marie Digby, Mandy Moore, Tegan and Sara, Vanilla Sky, Biffy Clyro, My Chemical Romance, Linkin Park, All Time Low, McFly, Plain White T's, Taylor Swift, and others have covered it in different styles. As long as the cover sounds great or invokes a smile, it's all good. Here is a brief sample of some great covers of some great songs. 1. Easy Star All-Stars - Karma Police (feat. Citizen Cope) [Radiohead] 2. Ebrahim - Lady & Paris/Tokyo [D'Angelo & Lupe Fiasco] 3. Donny Hathaway - Jealous Guy [John Lennon] 4. Obadiah Parker - Hey Ya [Andre 3000] 5. Cibo Matto - About a Girl [Nirvana] 6. Ebrahim - Oops, I Did It Again [Britney Spears] 7. Kay Pettigrew - Fresh Prince of Bel Air [Will Smith] 8. Nina Gordon - Straight Outta Compton [N.W.A.] 9. The Bird and the Bee - Don't Stop the Music [Rihanna] 10. Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings - Inspiration Information [Shuggie Otis] 11. Ben Kweller - Wait [The Beatles] 12. Calico Horse - Idioteque [Radiohead] 13. Ben Folds - Bitches Ain't Shit [Dr. Dre] 14. Seu Jorge - Changes [David Bowie] Comments[4] |

Mon, 19 January 2009 ![]() I began this mix in the beginning of December, but holidays and vacations left me struggling to find time at home. Mon, 24 November 2008 ![]() There's a theme with my latest mix, I swear...I just can't think of it right now. Just by looking at the playlist, there's a lot of repeats with remixers and artists, yet the connection from one track to the next shouldn't make sense on paper. Fri, 3 October 2008 ![]() Same old story...mixing mashups has ruled my life lately. Something about the harmonies of the Motown sound of Edwin Starr with Rihanna intrigues me. So much so, that I made a mix of mostly top-40 mashed together with music from the last 4 decades. I dare you to listen to R.Kelly's "I'm A Flirt" and not have the chorus stuck in your head. It's infectious...so don't judge me! It's short like the last 'hip-hop electro mash-up' just so I can get started on the next one. I hope you enjoy! 1. Introduction - Shake Whatcha Momma Gave Ya 2. Sat, 13 September 2008 ![]() I'm on this mash-up kick. I could have spent more time working on this one and kept it going, but I'm enjoying it so much that I just want to share what I've done so far. I initially wanted to keep the 'krunktronic' theme, where I was just mashing electro beats with dirty south anthems, but it turns out that I want to mix in everything I get my hands on. That means 80s, 90s and current pop hits with any kind of funky beat I could find. If it didn't fit, I tried to force it together. I took little bits and pieces of everything...and I think it shows. 1. Cino - Thang Thang/Sunglasses at Night (Corey Hart paul remix) 2. Rollin' draped up, baller, to keep the sun outcha eyes, smokin' sticks and sippin' bar so you best done realize."
I made this mix because I want to hear more hip hop over electro beats. I'm
simply in that mood. I mashed a variety of electro-dance tracks
together with a bunch of hip hop acapellas. It's in the same vein as A-Trak's "Dirty South Dance" and, hopefully, just as much fun. ...and, yes, that is The Reading Rainbow theme at 27 minutes. 1. The Bumblebeez (feat. Pase Rock & Amanda Blank) - Rio (paul remix) 2. Swizz Beatz - That Oprah (The American Dream remix/Sound of Disco - paul blend) 3. Spank Rock - Bump (paul remix) 4. Wed, 23 July 2008 ![]() I'm having difficulty here...I'm working on 3 different mixes right now. This means that I probably won't be able to post a real one for at least another week. In the meantime, listen to the new Diplo and Santogold mixtape called "Top Ranking". The other day, I found a track by M.I.A. and Santogold called "Get It Up" that's featured on the mixtape. It features remixes of her own songs as well as other artists that I assume she's been inspired by. It's difficult to classify the style of songs that are on here...which is fine by me. Mon, 7 July 2008 ![]() I don't even know what to write about this podcast. It's the second in the series and it was inspired because I will be seeing The Roots perform for the 3rd time later this month - two weeks before I head to Lollapalooza in Chicago. Tue, 10 June 2008 ![]() Since I seem to use so many MSTRKRFT tracks in my mixes, I decided that it would make sense to create a 'best-of MSTRKRFT' mix. See? It only makes sense. So here are most of my favourite tracks that MSTRKRFT has made even better! In addition, I sprinkled in a few of their originals as well. Word on the 'net is that MSTRKRFT will be releasing a new album in September. In the meantime, they've been consistently putting out remixes over the last couple of years. They've even began treading the pop-music market. I don't seem to mind...I now enjoy that Usher song. 1. Wolfmother - Woman (MSTRKRFT remix) 2. Brazilian Girls - Jique (MSTRKRFT remix) 3. Justice - D.A.N.C.E. (MSTRKRFT remix) 4. Usher - Love In This Club (MSTRKRFT remix) 5. Easy Love 6. Kylie Minogue - Wow (MSTRKRFT remix) 7. Metric - Monster Hospital (MSTRKRFT remix) 8. Sun, 25 May 2008 ![]() This is a hip hop mix that I did sometime in 2006. As you can see from the tracklist, there are a lot of songs, yet the whole mix is only 50 minutes. I cut each track down to 1 or 2 minutes, leaving only the verses I like and I mixed the hell out of the rest. It was the first time I really put a vocal track over another beat, creating a blend of 2 songs. Most of the songs are blended into each other and the rest are tied in with interludes and other sounds. It's one of those mixes where I look back and shake my head because I think I spent much too much time doing things that only I'll be able to hear...unless you really know the songs well. One of the blends that I was most happy with is the Lupe Fiasco vocal track for Kick, Push that I put over Kanye's beat he gave Cam'ron for the song, Down and Out. I'm not a fan of Cam'ron...especially what he raps over that beat, but I absolutely love that beat. It's at about 26:00 minutes if you want to skip and quickly check it out! 1) paul: the reintroduction 2) Jay-Z - Public Service Announcement (Kno remix) 3) Cunninlynguists - Lynguistics 4) Binary Star - Reality Check 5) Interlude - Knos Diggin 6) Little Brother - All For You 7) Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek - Love Speakeasy (paul remix with Jay-Z) 8) Common feat. Sun, 11 May 2008 ![]() This podcast is a compilation of songs from artists I've been listening to for the last few weeks. Most of them are by bands I'll be seeing at Lollapalooza this year. All of them are on constant rotation in my car and headphones. The thing is, I'm a little worried. The high-level of hipster groove and soul within this collection has brought me to the point where I must warn you if you plan on listening to it straight through: This compilation will rock your socks. I have personally been through 3 pairs of gray Costco socks - it actually puts the 'r' in 'rock-socking'. It's disgusting. Be afraid. Oh, and Santogold leads the pack. My socks flee my feet and run in pairs when they hear her name. 1) Santogold - Shove It (feat. Spank Rock) 2) Spank Rock - Rick Rubin (President Eutl remix) (3:30) 3) M.I.A. - 20 Dollar (6:53) 4) The Roots - Rising Down (feat. Mos Def & Styles P) (11:07) 5) J Dilla - Creepin' On You (14:40) 6) The Cool Kids - 'Sup (17:24) 7) Kid Sister - Girlie Rock (Flosstradamus mix) (19:48) 8) Black Kids - I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You (The Twelves Remix) (22:29) 9) Van She - Strangers (Van She Tech Remix) (26:05) 10) Bloc Party - The Prayer (Does It Offend You, Yeah? Remix) (29:51) 11) Does It Offend You, Yeah? - Doomed Now (33:08) 12) Santogold - L.E.S. Artistes (XXXChange Remix) (36:42) Comments[1] |
Tue, 6 May 2008 ![]() That's pretty much what I was thinking when I heard the remix of Teenager's "Alone Again" by VAN SHE. They have a great way of cutting up the sample and fueling it with 80’s post punk, funk and synth pop. I began mixing that track with a Louis La Roche song before I realized that all I wanted to do was play VAN SHE remixes. So I blended a bunch of them together. The great thing about VAN SHE is that they are, first and foremost, an Aussie band...not a 'remix band'. Their debut album, "V", comes out in August on Modular Records. On this album they worked with producer Jim Abbiss (Arctic Monkeys, Ladytron, Kasabian). What I've been most impressed with is the remixes they've done. Their 'sound' blends well together so I tried to make a VAN SHE 'remix-mega-mix' without screwing around too much. So, take the next 48-minutes and enjoy. 1) Teenager - Alone Again (Van She Tech Remix) 2) Ladyhawke - Back Of The Van (Van She Tech Turbo Fire Engine Mix) 3) Dragonette - I Get Around (Van She Vocal Mix) 4) New Young Pony Club - Ice Cream (Van She Tech Remix) 5) Martine Topley-Bird - Poison (Van She Mix) 6) I Am Finn - I Love You (Van She Tech Remix) 7) Feist - 1234 (Van She Remix) 8) The Bravery - Time Won't Let Me Go (Van She Tech Remix) 9) Klaxons - Gravity's Rainbow (Van She Remix) 10) Van She - Cat and the Eye (Van She Tech Remix) Comments[0] |
Thu, 24 April 2008 ![]() I've mixed another electro podcast. I've been looping crazy samples for the past few weeks and trying to get away with blending them into 'French house' songs...even when the artists aren't French. It was awkward at first, but now they're friends. My goal is to make it 'Frenchier', thereby turning it into 'Frenchier house'. Another thing about this mix is that I've finally found a pretty cool beat from an A-Trak remix that I used for the Call Me Up acapella by Chromeo. It's pretty simple, but I think it worked. Also, I did a mash up of a hellogoodbye acapella over a Digitalism beat sometime last year and I decided to include it here because I'm playing around with this voice filter that works well. I was recently introduced to the music of Louis La Roche. He's 17, from the UK, and just released an EP called The Peach that you can download for free. He's French house squared. I mixed his title track using a loop of Yelle, which I have been playing in my head for days now. Also, I had an urge to make a Kris Kross remix. All in all, I'm hoping it worked and you can enjoy it. 1) Justice - Stress (Auto remix) 2) Matt & Kim - Yeah Yeah (Flosstradamus remix) 3) Cut Copy - Lights & Music (Boys Noize Happy Birthday remix) 4) Boys Noize - Oh! (paul remix b/w Chromeo) 5) hellogoodbye - All Of Your Love (paul remix b/w Digitalism) 6) Ocelot - Lo Sforzo (Your Dirty Habit remix) 7) Chromeo - Fancy Footwork (Russ Chimes remix) 8) Yelle - Ce Jeu (The Twelves remix) 9) Digitalism - Pogo (The Horrors remix) 11) Louis La Roche - Peach (paul remix) 12) The Whitest Boy Alive - Golden Cage (Fred Falke remix) 13) Basment Jaxx - Rendez Vu (House Moguls Remix) 14) Kris Kross - Jump (paul remix) 15) Goldfrapp - A & E (Hercules & Love Affair Remix) Comments[0] |
Tue, 1 April 2008 ![]() I've been waiting to put together a 'best of' Daft Punk mix for a while and here it is (and I'm actually happy with it!). Seeing them live last summer at Lollapalooza provided inspiration for the idea of using Daft Punk to chop, loop, and blend all of their greatest hits into one mega-mix (minus the MJ). Last month I began throwing together some things and here we are. I don't feel as though I held back, but I tried to keep the original tracks intact so it sounds like a glorified 'best of'. I could have kept going and mixed much longer, but I figured I'd break this up into several hour long podcasts. Here's the first hour of The Daft Punk Mix - by me! 1. Too Long (Alive 2007)/Too Long blend 2. Digital Love (Boris Dugosh Remix)/Technologic 3. Technologic/Fresh 4. One More Time/Around the World/Technologic 5.
